Drawing smooth curves with the pen tool

All drawing tools (run stitch, satin, fill, bezier, applique) support two ways to place points:

Corner Nodes (Left Click)

Left-clicking places a sharp corner point (shown as a square). The path goes straight from the previous point to this one. Use corners for angular shapes, straight edges, and sharp turns.

Smooth Curve Nodes (Right Click)

Right-clicking places a smooth curve point (shown as an orange circle). The curve between points is automatically calculated so it flows smoothly through each point. Use smooth nodes for rounded shapes, organic curves, and natural outlines.

You can mix corner and curve nodes freely. For example, a heart shape might use smooth nodes for the curves at the top and a corner node for the sharp point at the bottom.

Manual Handles (Left Click + Drag)

For precise control, left-click and drag to create a corner node with manual bezier handles. The handles control the curvature going in and out of the point. This is useful when you need exact control over a specific curve section.

Editing After Drawing

Once a shape is finalized, switch to the Reshape tool (A) to edit individual nodes. Click a node to select it, drag to move it, or pressDelete to remove it. To insert a new node on an existing path, hold Alt and left-click for a corner node, or Alt+right-click for a smooth curve node.

Tips

  • Press Ctrl+Z while drawing to undo the last placed point
  • Press Enter or double-click to finalize the shape
  • Fewer points with smooth nodes often gives better results than many corner nodes
  • To draw a circle, place 4 smooth nodes (right-click) at the top, right, bottom, and left
